I get the concept of timeboxing, and I do this in my calendar most days - but I find it's WAY too easy for me to move the boxes - so if I don't feel like doing something, my attention scatters or something else edges its way in (like a client meeting) the whole exercise of boxing my time feels futile. I think timeboxing is most useful on days when your work cadence is driven by meetings and appointments you don’t control. I only time-box tasks to my calendar on days where I’ve got 3 or more meetings that have chopped up my day. In that case, timeboxing helps me know what I should be working on between meetings and how much can fit in a day. My brain is mushy after a meeting. If I defer figuring out what to work on next till after the meeting, I’ll end up just twiddling my thumbs until my next meeting. It sounds like you might be timeboxing on days when you can use different planning strategies.

If I’ve got a day with no meetings or meetings just at the start or end of the day, I’ll use the “playlist method” for planning my work day. I’ll make a list of tasks I want to work on and then order them vertically in the order I want to work on them with no sense of the exact time I’ll work on them. The playlist method is a bit more forgiving. There’s less pressure when tasks run a little bit long or short of your expected time since it doesn’t slide your entire schedule up and down.

And if you like to work based on vibes, just pop the task you do want to work on to the top of your list, work through it, check it off, and then return to your list.
