I need tips on how to manage up. My boss constantly says they love my work, trust my expertise, and are thrilled with the client feedback we get. However, every week, something becomes an 'emergency': a decision they made against my advice yields poor results, they change an established process and then get upset about the resulting delay, etc. These 'emergencies' are stressful and eat into my work time.

Besides producing quality work, being transparent about timelines, providing explanations for decisions, and having regular check-in calls, I'm not sure how to handle their micromanaging and insecurities. I think you’ve already identified the root cause and the correct remedy - finding a new role where you have a manager that understands the basic physics of work - if you add new work to your plate or need modify work that was done, something must be delayed or deferred.
<br/>

There are of course exceptions, once in a while, an emergency might require you to work a bit longer one day or pull a weekend but it sounds like emergencies have become normalized in your role and so it isn’t fair to ask you to always pull extra time to handle their mismanagement and toxic culture of everything being an emergency.
<br/>
<br/>
If I were you, I’d look for a new role. It’s easy to be discouraged by the narrative of a “bad market” and not start the process of looking for a new role. I’d carefully consider whether the market is actually bad and if it being bad materially changes your ability to find a better role before not trying.
<br/>
<br/>
Lucky for you, I think your ideal endgame isn’t tied as directly to the market-as-a-whole as you might think. You don't need “the market” to give you a job, you just need one employer/hiring manager to give you a job.

<br/>
Remember you succeed with one singular offer, not if you get x% of all companies to give you an offer where x is higher in a good market and lower in a bad market.
