My iPhone now displays in grayscale to minimize compulsive checking when I know there’s nothing new to see. The idea is your brain loves color, if you drain the color from your phone, you start losing interest in it biologically.

My early results say it works. My screen time is down 20% this week. I think the most powerful effect is that meeting a hideous gray screen when I pull out my phone is an obvious reminder of my intention to look at it less. But if I just habituate to this, like I habituated to dismissing screen time alerts, then this will just be a short-term fix.

It's easier to have smaller, less-hard conversations frequently than wait till there is a big problem. Think of it like resistance training, if you don’t gradually build up the load you can carry, when faced with a big load you’ll either hurt yourself or be unable to get the bar off the ground (start the conversation).

One nice thing about frequent, less-hard conversations with critical feedback is that you’ll probably avoid the really heavy conversations altogether since you are paying down that emotional/feedback debt a bit at a time and are creating an environment where sharing critical feedback is the norm. It’s been years and years since my co-founder and I have had a heated conversation (we've had our fair share) but nowadays we're in a good rhythm of bringing things up early and often.

Here’s our workflow, which you can copy. We’ve got a recurring task, each week, where we write down our feedback for the other person in a Notion document. I’d recommend setting a few minutes each week to write down a bit of feedback for each important colleague relationship and then find a way to share it with them.
