I am working on my own start up and I'm actually very curious about your work / life balance and relationship with remove work. The reason why I'm curious is that your profile picture and bio page keep striking me as 'free spirit', 'independent thinkers' or 'hippie'. Please forgive me if I'm absurdly wrong, but I would imagine you as more like a digital nomad living somewhere like Bali, Fiji or Chiang Mai working remotely. That is very different from the image of a company founder or entrepreneur in my mind. But a huge encouragement for some reason. I’d love to learn more about your story.

I'd say work / life balance has constantly evolved for me. In the early years of building Sunsama, when I was single, had no wife, and had no kid my idea of acceptable work / life balance was different because there wasn't much "life" stuff I was interested beyond work. Each step along the way, I've had to adapt my working hours as my non-work responsibilities grew and I started to see the impact on my mental and physical health from working too much.

For me the struggle has always been not to throw myself so deep into work that there's no time, energy, and presence left for anything else. It takes time and it's a constant process but it's possible to get there. I think the biggest step-change in work-life balance is when I started having a consistent daily shutdown routine in the evening: a time where I stopped working and wrote up my progress for the day. Before that, I would stop in the evening for dinner and a workout and then come back to desk again at night. That lifestyle destroyed my sleep quality, energy, and kept my brain in an always-on mode that led to faster burn out.

<br/>
And that’s the one thing I recommend to everyone for for work-life balance. Pick when you’ll end your day and stick to it. I’m thankful I cemented that habit a year or so before my son was born. Now I can go into each day confident that I’ll be able to stop work when I intended to, without feeling guilty or unaccomplished, which lets me be present for quality time with family.

While I too would love to buy in on the free-spirit mythology you’ve concocted based on my admittedly eccentric choice of facial hair, I’ve got to burst your bubble and tell you that I live a much less interesting life. I do work fully remote from Hawai’i but I'm not a carefree “digital nomad” bouncing between adventurous locations. We live here for family reasons. My wife was raised here and her parents are on the older side, with significant health concerns. We get to look after them, they help look after our child, and we maximize the limited time we’ll all have together.

Besides that, we live a pretty normal life, we wake up, get our kid ready for day care, work through the day, spend the evenings getting some exercise or taking the kid to the park/beach, eat dinner as a family, and then unwind with a little reading or tv.

<br/>
And that’s why I love working remotely. It lets me spend quality time with my family. I get to eat lunch with my wife every day and instead of commuting I’m taking my kid to the beach. While I love my colleagues, one day, on my death bed I think I'll be more content knowing I spent the vast majority of my life near my family, instead of in an office or in a car.
