             Relying on feelings alone can be misleading. Our minds are prone to biases – we might remember the one day we ate a salad and forget the three days of fast food, or assume we’re “pretty active” without realizing how much time we spend sitting.

             Objective tracking helps cut through these 
biases. It holds up a mirror to our habits. For instance, you might

             like you’re walking a lot each day, but a step tracker could reveal you barely hit 5,000 steps. You may think you have great heart health, but your ApoB and blood pressure levels could be through the roof.

             See, when it comes to exercise and physical adaptation, the body needs to feel the

             Our bodies are incredible machines that are constantly trying to make us operate as efficiently as possible.

             If it does not

              </strong>

             Why would it? If you're not going to use it, it's just an unnecessary use of energy and resources.

             <em>
              "Force is the language of cells"
             </em>
            </p>

             When you create physical change, you're having a series of conversations with your nervous system. Through consistency, repetition and an element of force you are letting it know it

             to change.

             And over time, it will do so.

             However, to apply force requires some discomfort. You are forcing your body to change, and that requires you to step a little outside your comfort zone.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             <em>
              The burning muscles, the increased breathing and heart rate, the feeling like you need to stop and rest.
             </em>
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             This is an essential part of the equation if you want to actually change, and when you think on 
it, it makes perfect and logical sense.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             But it doesn't need to be too much, and shouldn't be.
            </p>

             "No pain; no gain" is extreme, outdated and unnecessary.
            </p>

             Just a little, done consistently, and repeatedly so, is enough.
            </p>

             Let's look at a practice like meditation.

             I hear this often: "I tried meditation and it didn't work for me"
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             When I dive deeper, it turns out that said person tried to sit still for 5-10 minutes and couldn't stop thinking.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             And they seem to assume that this means meditation doesn't work for them, almost as if people who do meditate could do so, with ease, immediately, with peaceful empty minds.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Similarly it can be common to look at people lifting heavy weights or doing something physically impressive and just say "I can't do that", as if getting to that point for anyone didn't require time and work.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             But like creating physical change takes time - and a measure of controlled intensity (stepping temporarily outside of your comfort zone) - so does creating neurological change.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Our modern environment makes it hard to feel the need to actually get up and move, and it simultaneously makes it hard to sit down and do nothing.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             And when we try to do the latter, we're bombarded with thoughts of things we've done (usually the things we feel like we could or should have done better) and things we have coming up (usually things we're worried about or are causing us some level of discomfort).
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             But the "magic" happens when you can learn to sit still and observe that perceived discomfort as just a state that is neither good nor bad (the cultivation of a practice known as "equanimity" in mediation teaching) and with practice and consistency, you get better at it.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             But it's not 
easy.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             <strong>
              Why do the "hard lessons stick"?
             </strong>
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Because they put us into an acute area of discomfort that force us to sit up and take notice.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             <strong>
              Why do we "learn from our mistakes"?
             </strong>
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Same reason.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             If we need to learn something new, like a foreign language, how do we do it? With 
continuous,
             <em>
              structured
             </em>
             practice and probably a lot of frustration, until it starts to click.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             But if we jump from learning French one week to German the next, we get nowhere fast and give up.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             If we want to develop a new habit, we can't - at least for most of us - just decide to do something differently and it's done.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             We need to forcibly -
             <em>
              stoically
             </em>
             - repeat something day in and day out until old habits are replaced with new ones and neural pathways are rewired.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 
0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             We can of course use tools and "hacks" like habit stacking and various motivational techniques to aid us along the way, but if we want to get better at anything, it takes work, time and a little bit of discomfort.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             But to reiterate and conclude, it really doesn't need to be unbearable.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             It has to be sustainable.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             It just needs to be a little bit of a challenge, relative to your level of comfort, done consistently, and the rest will write itself.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 
20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             None of us are so special or unique that this principle does not apply.
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             And if someone else can do it,
             <strong>
              so can you
             </strong>
             .
            </p>
            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Maybe not in exactly the same way, or to the same level, but to some extent you can always improve from where you are right now,
             <strong>
              and that's what it's all about.
             </strong>

             Just don't give up, don't compare your success to others (key!), don't go "all" in and then back to "nothing" the moment you deviate slightly 
from the plan or feel like it's not working.

            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Just keep going; whether it's fat loss, fitness, meditation or any area of education or self development, if you don't stop and don't get too comfortable,

              you can't lose.

             And when you are finding that something seems easy, or you're getting comfortable, just think

             And just keep at it.
