I trick myself sometimes into pretending this isn’t a job when it very much is a job. I look forward to writing it. I do things that make it tempting: burning a nice candle; a good Spotify playlist, eating a cookie after I’ve written something, going to a nice café that does good coffee, I put a soft blanket on my lap, I read someone else’s Substack to give me a little boost. Running a Substack also means not running out of ideas. A writer’s life means having things to write about. Say yes to experiences (big or small) and you'll never run out of content. You don’t need to be at a desk, type on your phone if you have a burning idea, the app is great for that.

The reason I can show up on this platform every week with plenty of ideas is because every week I nourish myself with one of the following: Morning Pages, a walk, a swim, a date with a friend, reading something that inspires me, being creative in other ways (food/art/movement.) Creative energy is an important part of running a business that relies on you/your ideas. Here are some questions to ponder:

         Having motivation or ‘goals’ (for Substack/anything) isn’t about hatching a massive grand plan or gunning for it overnight, it’s about the small choices we make over and over again; and how we show up in our habits and daily practice. For me, it’s writing on here regularly (and taking a short break every three months or so). I’m so glad so many people are enjoying it, I’m really enjoying it too.
