Nobody is more surprised than Chris Black—who wears his status as a cultural insider and tastemaker with a mix of pride and chagrin—that Chris Black decided to launch his own menswear brand. He’s long had one foot in the fashion world as a consultant for brands like J.Crew and Thom Browne, but the idea to go all-in came when he was approached by friends of his with backgrounds in marketing and fashion, Paul Shaked and Vinod Kasturi, who pitched him on raising money for a CB-fronted clothing line. “I was like, sure,” Black recalls with a laugh. “I didn’t really think much of it. I get a lot of inbound that doesn’t turn into anything, you know what I mean?”

When the funding came through, Black approached the project as a “place to get all my friends together.” The production team in LA is run by a buddy from “the era of menswear 1.0,” Black says, and he brought in a frequent collaborator, art director Sam Jayne, to work on design. His friends Jeff Henrickson and Cobey Arner photographed the first campaigns. There’s a Hanover magazine in the works with contributions from writers in his Rolodex. And he designed one of the T-shirts with Charli xcx in mind, which has already been worn on stage by Karly Hartzman of Wednesday. “Really, I imagine Hanover for people that play guitar,” he says.

Those are the two things I care about most. I also want it to feel lived-in. And if you keep the parameters pretty tight, I think it makes it a lot easier. Honestly, I wasn’t trying to explore outside of my zone of what I thought we were capable of doing off rip.

I think people try to make it very serious. I’m going to wear it and I’m trying to make something that you like and wear. That’s really it.

I always refer to that as the skate shop model, where you can walk in and if you want a T-shirt, you can get it. If you want a carabiner, if you want a lighter, there's something at every price. And so I wouldn’t want to rule anything out.
