                              You're halfway through your alcohol-free month. By now, you've probably tried your fair share of alcohol-free drinks.

                              Millie Gooch, founder of

                              , a U.K.-based support group for sober and sober-curious women, is a fan of mocktails and drinks like nonalcoholic beers, wines, ciders and spirits. They allow you to "keep the exact same ritual and habits of drinking, but you just change what's in your glass."

                              Nonalcoholic and low-alcohol (NoLo) beverages may also reduce alcohol harm, she says. A 2020 survey
                              <a data-linkto="https://" style="color:#2A7079;text-decoration:underline;" title="conducted by the Social Market Foundation">
                               conducted by the Social Market Foundation
                              </a>
                              , a U.K. think tank, asked 3,000 people whether drinking a NoLo product helped them cut back on drinking. An "encouraging" 41% of those who recently consumed a NoLo product reported cutting back or giving up alcohol completely, the report authors wrote.
                              <br/>
                              <br/>
                              NA (nonalcoholic) drinks aren't always helpful if you're trying to take a break, says George Koob, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. They can elicit cravings for alcoholic beverages for some people, so stay clear if you think you might want a real cocktail after your mocktail. "It really has to do with your fortitude and your ability to resist that craving."

                        *Cinchona bark: This bittering agent has a tannic and earthy taste and is used to flavor tonic water. You can buy cut and sifted cinchona bark online.

                       Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot. Add the citric acid, cinchona bark, sugar, salt and basil leaves to the pot, and bring to a boil. Add the fennel, and stir to combine. Continue to boil for 2 minutes, and remove from heat. Allow to cool, and strain using a fine mesh strainer. Store in a bottle of your choice in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

                       Over ice, fill half of a glass with your fennel tonic and top with sparkling water.
