                   A specific trend brought me to a corner of the internet where adults commiserate about their elementary schoolers asking for Robux (the virtual currency for Roblox). It's a common enough experience that there's an entire genre of

                   dedicated to it.

                   How did I end up here? I've been trying to understand how our growing digital economy is impacting kids. I was overtaken by this obsession last fall when Nike Elite backpacks were a hot item on the 2024 back-to-school shopping lists. Their popularity made sense because

                    they'd gone viral
                   </a>
                   in the tween and teen TikTok algorithm. The surprising part was that young people found a way to transform this viral item into an underground economy built on the buying and selling of

                   —often stolen. As a result, our team received requests for help from schools facing disruptions, including student altercations and in-class distractions.

                    Despite being generally aware of online risks, kids are three times more likely to fall for scams than their parents, according to a

                    . The most troubling finding from this report is the fact that
