My excuse for taking so long was that I needed a japanese sim card to get this and verify my phone number, etc. to be able to actually sign up. (It is a pretty cool spot where you can just use your QR code to get in, operating 24/7 electronically)

But that’s really just an excuse. Theoretically I could’ve still worked out at home every day (we do have a bodyweight program in the app) or gotten a guest pass or figured something out. But the reality is it is really easy to make excuses and put off working out, even if you run a health company.

Looking back for the past few months, my Gyroscope health tab had been yelling at me that my workouts had dropped off. Even earlier this week I came up with a few excuses, like oh it is the evening so it is probably too crowded.

I think a lot of people do some fancy blood test or are worried about having some niche deficiency, but then skip checking some really basic things — like whether they have been strength training. Unfortunately all our research and testing has shown it is basically a requirement for humans, and not something that should be skipped.

It is a bit counter intuitive.. if you are tired, lifting weights and doing hard things shouldn’t give you MORE energy? But it just seems to be how the body works.

But, for some reason, we always forget this!

Even if you read about it, or experienced it yourself and noticed it. A few weeks later, your brain conveniently erases that memory. To persist it, you need to really write it down somewhere (or sign up for Gyroscope and turn on your Health Score)

I think because the body’s prime directive is to conserve energy, so mentally exercising sounds really bad and tough and not something you want to do -- it is very tempting or easy to put it off.

One of our big insights in the last few years, and one of the reasons our members in X and G1 have been getting so much better results than
elsewhere, is discovering out that strength training is really essential — along with adequate protein and all the other basics. Most other things treat this as an optional thing or something to do for a few weeks rather than a lifelong necessity. Yes, you could just take some ozempic, or just eat less for a while and lose some weight, but that isn’t ultimately enough to be *healthy* and operate your body at peak capacity.

Actually back in the day, this was one of my main motivations for building the first version of what would eventually become Gyroscope. When I went running, I felt pretty great afterwards. For those 30 or 60 minutes or however long, I was in the zone and would have great ideas.

But then I would forget about that feeling, and days or weeks may go by
until I felt compelled to go again. Only while doing it do you really get into that flow. But once you’ve fallen out of it, then it is hard to go back.

One week becomes one month. New habits kick in.

The good news is that starting is the hardest, and it gets a bit easier after that. Maybe going to the gym the first time after a long break is really painful, or easy to put off. But after a few times, it starts to get more fun. Or at least you already paid for the membership, so that is a forcing function.

Or after you start to notice improvements --
getting stronger, looking better, but also just feeling better after -- it becomes more exciting to go. Or at least, you start to see a nice looking chart in your Gyroscope dashboard, and want to keep it going up.

Anyways, I’m writing this now partly as a reminder for myself to keep going to the gym. But also for you to start now, rather than wait until January 1!

Though it’s not all fun and games. The first day I went back and excitedly tried to do heavy weights, I messed up my neck a bit.

It was pretty sore for a few days. I think I didn’t really warm up enough (or at all—don’t tell Ollie). But apparently all those warmups and stretches that are in the workout program actually are useful. So please do the warmups
thoroughly, start with low weights, etc. and don’t get hurt!
