       For over two decades, I've worked as an ACLU lawyer defending civil rights and civil liberties, including our challenges to the first Trump administration's Muslim ban, racial profiling and illegal stops by local law enforcement, and state and local anti-immigrant laws. But I'll be honest, Fred, this current moment is completely unprecedented, and the stakes are unfathomably high.
      </p>
      <p>
       <strong>
        Right now, I'm preparing to argue before the Supreme Court in
        <em>
         Trump v. Barbara
        </em>
        , a critical case in which the Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to end birthright citizenship as we know it.
       </strong>
      </p>
      <p>
       I'm a second-generation American myself, so I understand the stakes here. The administration is trying to deny citizenship to hundreds of thousands of American-born children every year, whose families are already part of communities across this country – and it's trying to gut the Fourteenth Amendment, which did away with caste-based exclusions from birthright citizenship at the end of the Civil War.
      </p>
      <p>
       President Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship plainly violates the Constitution, longstanding Supreme Court precedent, and fundamental American values.
      </p>
      <p>
       <strong>
        This is more than a legal case. This is a fight for our best American values:  that all of us born on U.S. soil are citizens alike.
       </strong>
      </p>
