                     A couple of days before their fall 2026 runway show for Loewe,

                     were shopping their own collection. “I want these for myself,” Hernandez said, grabbing a flat, rubber-toed, slip-on sneaker that looked like a cross between an aquasock and a climbing shoe. Examining a shelf of handbags in a rainbow of suedes in their bright Paris design studio, Hernandez picked up a delightfully rounded black nubuck briefcase. “I’m getting this one,” he added. “Good! Because I got the brown,” McCollough replied.

                     This was a new and thrilling experience for the creative and life partners, who have been making clothes for women since 2002, when they launched their beloved NYC-based label, Proenza Schouler. But until the duo joined the LVMH-owned Spanish luxury house last year following Jonathan Anderson’s
                     <a style="text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;">
                      move to Dior
                     </a>
                     , they had never before done menswear. “For selfish reasons, we’re very excited,” McCollough joked as Hernandez pulled on a bomber jacket that bloomed with three hoods layered on top of one another that resembled an abstract sculpture of fuzzy shearling and gingham check. The fit? Perfect.

                     The designers pulled out several other pieces of playful outerwear that exemplify the bright spirit they’re bringing to Loewe: a leather parka that inflates like a life vest; a check bomber in a blousy, cropped silhouette they referred to as a “mushroom fit”; an overcoat made of “really technological” fabric that was woven and embroidered with flossy yarn until it resembled a cascade of brown ostrich feathers; a hoodie molded from seamless sky blue leather.

                     This season has given us plenty of serious, cinematic menswear, as if guys universally aspire to look like they stepped out of a French film noir. But the two newcomers have provided a compelling counterargument with a bizarro vision that is funky and tactile, that ignites the imagination and brings out your inner eccentric. Moving down the racks, the designers gleefully jiggled a tiny pajama top made of rubber that seems destined for Harry Styles’s wardrobe. “It’s a little pervy,” McCollough said with a sly wink. “There's a preppy, dorky vibe which we love, but done in a completely demented way,” Hernandez added.

                     Perhaps because they have been inseparable since 1998, when the two Parsons students met at a nightclub in New York, McCollough and Hernandez are widely referred to in fashion as “the boys.” Now they are the “Loewe boys.” And they do have a boyish energy, as if they wouldn’t be able to sit still even if they actually had the time to do so. At one point, they were surprised to hear that their sticky, sexy Loewe campaign by Talia Chetrit was plastered all over Paris, because they’ve been so wrapped up in the seven collections they’re working on at the same time. “We basically live here,” Hernandez said, referring to the design studio.

                     Though they share a work ethic with their peers at the pinnacle of luxury fashion, McCollough and Hernandez have yet to be touched by pretension and artifice. They dress the same they always have, in a sort of creative director uniform-meets-prepster mashup. They are fans of vintage Polo knits and simple, straight trousers, and when I visited they were wearing matching black Salomon sneakers. They’re quick to laugh and quicker to finish each other’s sentences. “We’ve never had a long term plan, ever,” McCollough said when I asked about their decision to leave Proenza Schouler for the big LVMH job. “We were just bored in New York,” added Hernandez. “We were there for a very long time, we sort of did it. And then Loewe called and we were like,

                     When they arrived at Loewe, the boys tapped back into the bubbly energy they felt in their early twenties, when Proenza blew up and launched them into New York fashion fame. They have always had an experimental bent, but at Loewe the expertise available to them has unleashed a new wave of creativity. “We’re pushing the cutting edge of what is technically possible in the world of make,” Hernandez said. “It’s so fun, the capabilities here are incredible,” McCollough added.

                     And they still have the crafty sensibility honed over years of working on an indie budget. They stopped at a furry hoodie made with shearling, the top half shaved and brunette and the bottom shaggy and dirty blonde. “We sent it to poodle groomers!” Hernandez said with a laugh, though he wasn’t joking—they literally got poodle experts to shape up their shearling fades. They might be too busy to enjoy their new city, but they’re evidently still having the time of their lives.

                     last September, launching menswear was their next big challenge. “In some ways, it’s more personal because we’re boys,” Hernandez said, as they perched on a couch surrounded by rails of runway samples. “I think it’s easier?” McCollough ventured. “But we find putting a suit together to be the hardest exercise for men. Because it’s all about the proportion of the lapel, and how long it is, and the underpinnings—what the styling is. And so it’s more in the nuances and the details. Whereas with women, you can often just do bolder gestures.”

                     As soon as they sat down they were up again, eagerly showing off more looks. For now, at least, the men’s is very much in conversation with the women’s line, each blended together in an androgynous language of materials and shapes. Said McCollough, “When we started editing the pieces, we almost ignored who was a boy and who was a girl. We were more looking at flow and how things connect to one another.” In June, their vision for menswear will be at the fore in a solo show during the men’s edition of Paris Fashion Week.

                     They have a strong foundation to build on. My eye was drawn to a spongy, narrow navy suit that was compellingly styled over an ugly-plaid mockneck and gingham silk shirt. Even the simplest garments contained clever surprises. What appeared to be the perfect pair of corduroy jeans were in fact made of shearling that had been delicately shaved with razor-straight wide wales. (Presumably not by the poodle groomers this time.)

                     The boys also informed me that a bright green overcoat made of molded latex, designed to bounce down the runway, would be translated into wool for the shop floor. “This is very much like an idea, an expression, a feeling, a materiality thing,” Hernandez said. Added McCollough: “And then you’ll go into the stores and there’s going to be tons to buy.”

                     What else will they be shopping for? McCollough pointed to a chunky ski sweater woven in a crazy gingham pattern which was styled with a pair of cotton jeans slathered in traffic cone-orange latex. “I don't know that I would necessarily wear this,” said McCollough. “It’s more of a show look, but I think that’s very much the attitude of how we dress. Our shirts are always kind of tucked in, our pants are usually kind of straight and boyish.”

                     Hernandez brought over a sweater that from afar looked like a handsome plaid knit that they might pull on for another long night in the studio. Up close, it was revealed to be made of superthin leather fabric knitted together using a specialized machine. “I mean, that’s kind of how I dress, just not in those materials,” McCollough noted. Hernandez considered the leather sweater, as if he was mentally adding it to cart. “I might!” he said.
