            Have you heard of AI "companions"? Chances are, your kid has.
           </p>
           <p>
            This goes deeper than using ChatGPT or Claude to help with homework. An AI companion is a lifelike app or website that is designed to mimic human-like relationships and imitate emotional support. They're too dangerous for kids under 18, but many teens are using them.
           </p>
           <p>
            <b>
             At Common Sense Media, we just released
             <span style="color:#0000ff;">
              <u>
               <a data-linkto="https://" style="color:#0000FF;text-decoration:underline;" title="Check out our new research">
                new research
               </a>
              </u>
             </span>
             on teens' use of AI companions. Here's what we found:
            </b>
           </p>
           <ul>
            <li>
             Nearly three-quarters of teens have used an AI companion.
            </li>
            <br/>
            <li>
             One in three have turned to them for social interactions or relationships, and one in three users have chosen them over humans for serious conversations.
            </li>
            <br/>
            <li>
             A third of these teens find conversations with AI companions to be as satisfying or more satisfying than those with real-life friends.
            </li>
           </ul>
           <p>
            Our findings show that the use of these platforms isn't a niche interest. It's mainstream teen behavior.
           </p>
           <p>
            AI companion chatbots, like those from Character.AI, Nomi, and Replika, are marketed to kids as friends, confidants, or even therapists—but that's not what they are. They aren't human and
            <em>
             should not
            </em>
            replace parents or professionals.
           </p>
           <p>
            Our testing from this spring shows that these products pose serious risks to young users. One of the most troubling features of these chatbots is the way they are hardwired to be agreeable.
           </p>
           <p>
            We found that they supported teens in making potentially harmful decisions, like dropping out of school, ignoring parents, and moving out without planning. We also found that these chatbots engaged teens in sexually explicit conversations and romantic roleplay. We rated these chatbots as unacceptable for use by kids and teens. Period.
           </p>
           <p>
            While many teens know about these chatbots, too many parents do not. That's why we're calling for action.
            <strong>

            The more that people know about AI companions, the sooner we can protect kids from them.

            We've also launched a petition urging these companies to ban kids and teens from their platforms until real protections are in place.
