Hello from Erica, Norah, and Kalyn on Chalkbeat’s national desk. Today’s big story looks at the efforts of music educators to make sure they’re staying relevant in an age of budget challenges and renewed focus on career education. We’ve also got a powerful story from our colleagues in New York about a high school designed to serve older immigrant students, reflections from P.E. teachers on the Presidential Fitness Test, and lots, lots more from around our network.

Music is good for the soul and good for the heart. Music educators believe it can also help students chart their path in life.

As high schools place more emphasis on preparing students for jobs after graduation,

rather than merely an extracurricular activity. These programs are partnering more frequently with groups that help students explore different careers.

Philadelphia’s Summer Drumline, for example, partners with Career Connected Learning PHL so that some students can be paid. That allows them to treat drumline like a summer job and give it more time and attention. Encouraged by his band director, participant Christian Borges composed an original piece and taught it to the other performers. Before, he wasn’t sure he would even go to college. Now he’s pursuing music education and wants to teach in Philadelphia public schools.

Other programs teach students about sound production and recording, DJing, and backstage jobs in the music industry.

<span style="font-weight: 400;">
“Not everybody’s going to be Beyonce,” said Catherine Cahill, CEO of the Mann Center, a Philadelphia concert venue that hosts the All City Orchestra Summer Academy. “But we also know that in the music business, there’s an enormous amount of opportunities backstage. We want to give them a pathway.”

This programming has been supported by multiple federal funding streams, including National Endowment for the Arts grants and Title IV money for career and technical education. Arts organizations are cutting staff and programming due to a more uncertain budget situation.

As private school voucher access expands in Indiana, rural students are using them at lower rates.

<span style="font-weight: 400;">
That’s partially because a third of the state’s counties have no private schools that accept vouchers, and schools that do take them are concentrated in more urban areas.

Bridget and her mom fled to the United States so she could continue her education, arriving in April 2024 with just the clothes on their back, a Bible, a hymnal, and a small stuffed mouse.

<span style="font-weight: 400;">
At their first check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, officials encouraged Bridget to enroll in school. Three of the four schools suggested to her at a New York City enrollment center turned her down. But the fourth, English Language Learners and International Support Preparatory Academy, or ELLIS, welcomed her with open arms.
