               Music is good for the soul and good for the heart. Music educators believe it can also help students chart their path in life.

               As high schools place more emphasis on preparing students for jobs after graduation,

                music education programs want to be viewed as part of the solution

               rather than merely an extracurricular activity. These programs are partnering more frequently with groups that help students explore different careers.

               Philadelphia’s Summer Drumline, for example, partners with Career Connected Learning PHL so that some students can be paid. That allows them to treat drumline like a summer job and give it more time and attention. Encouraged by his band director, participant Christian Borges composed an original piece and taught it to the other performers. Before, he wasn’t sure he would even go to college. Now he’s pursuing music education and wants to teach in Philadelphia public schools.

               Other programs teach students about sound production and recording, DJing, and backstage jobs in the music industry.

               “Not everybody’s going to be Beyonce,” said Catherine Cahill, CEO of the Mann Center, a Philadelphia concert venue that hosts the All City Orchestra Summer Academy. “But we also know that in the music business, there’s an enormous amount of opportunities backstage. We want to give them a pathway.”

               Eighteen-year-old Bridget was a strong student in her native Ecuador and just shy of graduating before gangs got so prevalent in her neighborhood that she became afraid to walk home from night classes.
