says even here, 4,000-6,000 meters below the surface, “There are creatures that make their living in the abyss. But you don't get high densities of them.”
The critters that survive here are limited not only by the absence of sunlight and near freezing temperatures, but also the crushing pressures, which range between 400-600 atm. To put that into perspective, the pressure at the ocean’s surface is 1 atm, an average car tire is 2-3 atm and inside a champagne bottle is around 6 atm.

Noelle says the creatures in the abyss are gelatinous and often have translucent or dark skin to avoid being detected by the only light present: bioluminescence.

Another interesting adaptation deep sea creatures have? Tiny eyes. “You're not going to see a lot of animals that invest, if you will, in growing large eyes. They're going to use their energy to … invest in their other senses,” Noelle says.

Marine biologist Craig McClain is fascinated with animal sizes, both the very big – “If you go to my Instagram page, I use a hashtag called Craig with big things” – and the itty bitty – “I have lots and lots of snails, and they get very, very tiny.” He says the size of an animal can tell scientists a lot about what that critter can do, “The most fundamental trait of an organism is how big or small it is.”

Knowing a creature’s size can tell researchers how fast it can move, how much energy it needs, how much it breathes and how much it urinates. It also gives them insight into how that animal might fare in scenarios like a predator-prey interaction, food competition and choosing a mate. All of these details can help determine an animal’s role in the ecosystem and it’s relatively easy to collect – unless that animal lives thousands of feet below the ocean surface.

That’s where many of the ocean’s giants live: in the twilight (200-1,000 meters) or midnight (1,000-4,000 meters) zones. “And everything after 4000 meters is super tiny,” which is the area this week’s newsletter is focused on: the abyssal, or abyssopelagic, zone. Early in his career, Craig wondered why organisms got so tiny beneath that 4000m mark. He hypothesized that food is too scarce at these depths for critters to get big–but he needed samples to be sure.

To collect deep sea samples, Craig uses a combination of underwater remote operated vehicles, human-operated submersibles, core sampling techniques and seabed net towing. “Most of that has been shipboard sampling,” which leaves him and the crew at the mercy of weather, technology and luck. He adds that crew dynamics, cramped spaces and a lack of exercise can make collection trips challenging. There’s one upside (or downside, depending on how you look at it): “Most research vessels in the U.S. are equipped with an ice cream freezer, where it's just full of like the whole ice cream aisle [at] the grocery.”

Still, Craig says a lot of his time is actually spent in the lab or in front of a computer. For example, one project required him to “take thousands of images of tiny snails, all in a microscope all summer long.”

He was surprised to find the deeper, abyssal zone snails weren’t always smaller than their shallower counterparts. “What we actually see is that there's this convergence,” Craig says. Some snail species did get smaller with depth, but others got larger. And the explanation came back to food abundance. “If you are too small, you don't have starvation resistance, [but if] you're too big, you require too much food. So this kind of Goldilocks size works the best.”

All of Craig’s work has reinforced the idea that body size is fundamental and essential information for other scientists to access. So, earlier this year Craig and a team of researchers launched a body size collection called The Marine Organismal Body Size (MOBS) Database. So far, they have size data for around 100,000 marine animals, around 40 percent of all described marine species. Craig says he hopes marine biologists will use this database in a myriad of ways. Already, a postdoc in his lab is investigating how species will respond to a warming climate, where higher temperatures are predicted to increase metabolism, and decrease oxygen and food availability, all of which point to shrinking body sizes in the future. But “this will be the first time that someone's actually quantified it.”
