                      Any individual customer support person may be helpful and empathetic, but their effectiveness is crushed by these systems designed to prioritize immediate cost savings over long-term customer satisfaction. It is a system working as intended.

                      We can poke around with

                      and pronouncements about the value of good service; these are good and worthwhile things to focus on. But ultimately, for a company to offer consistently high quality service requires the people at the top to care enough about support that they are willing to spend money on it. More money than a spreadsheet says is “necessary.”

                      One of the reasons I am still at Help Scout, after 9 years, is that our founders are still actively involved, and still care about building a company that is good to deal with. It’s not perfect, nothing is, but they have the right intentions and they consistently back those intentions up with the funding, effort, and care that’s required to make good service happen. People on our team are able to look after their customers, for the most part.
