                             It’s official, if you haven’t heard by now,
                             <a data-linkto="https://" style="color:#008294;text-decoration:underline;" title="Senate Bill 277">
                              Senate Bill 277
                             </a>
                             (SB 277) is on second reading at the State House of Representatives. This means that soon, your State Representative will be voting on this bill, which weakens the duty of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to protect Hoosier families facing “imminent and substantial endangerment”.
                             <br/>
                             <br/>
                             Additionally, the House Environmental Affairs Committee amended the bill to limit IDEM’s ability to study and regulate new pollutants that are being discharged into the environment, such as PFAS compounds. This bill narrows IDEM's focus to just two types of PFAS in our environment. Our Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter Legislative Committee and our Hoosier Chapter Executive Committee voted unanimously to oppose SB 277!

                                 Provides the Governor with sole discretion to remove an Environmental Rules Board member without cause.

                                 Removes the requirement for a member of the Environmental Rules Board (ERB) to be qualified.

                                 Holds back IDEM from regulating a majority of PFAS.
                                </li>
                                <li>
                                 Allows for solid waste, or industrial waste products to be sprayed or spread onto the land surface which could very quickly turn into a significant source of solid waste runoff into our waterways.
                                </li>
                                <li>
                                 Removes the option of the commissioner to prevent pollution.
                                </li>
                                <li>
                                 Makes optional the duty of the commissioner to hold polluters accountable.

                               SB 277 touches on a wide array of issues impacting our environment such as IDEM's role in acting on behalf of Hoosiers which is to, as stated in Section 44 on page 17, “

                                Fulfill the responsibilities of each generation as trustee of the environment for succeeding generations.
