             Having different metrics to learn or new habits to figure can feel like too much work at first. Tracking meals, staying active, going to the gym, getting enough sleep, it can all seem daunting at the beginning.

             So today’s topic is how and why to not be illiterate.

             Fortunately, as humans we are capable of learning new things... Learning new languages and symbols.

             For the last few months, I’ve been studying to read kanji (the writing system for Japanese, based on what were originally Chinese characters).

             For many years, I had put this off. It was just too difficult. I would read a book or watch some video, but none of it would stick, especially without using it daily.

             Of course, our health is the same way. Everyone struggles at first, but some people learned these things long ago, even as kids. For others who didn’t get that education early on, it may be a struggle.

             It has been interesting to see how quickly the brain is able to adapt. It is often thought that only children are able to learn new things, and then as adults we are basically 
stuck. But even adults are capable of learning.

             With even just a few minutes of daily studying, things that were difficult to remember or confusing when first seen last month, have now become second nature after a few repetitions. The first few times were really annoying or frustrating, but eventually (or because of that), they started to sink in.

            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Sleep also seems to really help. Some evening I will be trying to learn something and keep failing the quiz. Then the next day after sleeping, try it again and all of a sudden I remember it.

             Words that 
took a lot of time and focus to spell out character by character, are now getting instantly parsed. However, it wasn’t easy or effortless. Even though this wanikani website is nicely designed, the actual learning process is a bit of work. The only way that those words stuck is after the frustration of getting it wrong a few times.

             Mixing it up, or feeling kind of stuck and struggling to remember. But at that point, special programs in the brain kick in.

             To start helping out, storing the thing that you seem to be needing. It is funny that almost all these systems work

              to help you save calories.

efficiently. We’re all capable of this.

             When we were kids, we were forced to learn to read, write, walk, and figure out a lot of quite difficult things. But our health and how to manage our own bodies was not on that list—so that is something we are just discovering now, and need to add on now.

             Just the fact that you’re reading this shows you were able to accomplish something very difficult—learning to read, with thousands of vocab words memorized. It was actually probably difficult at the time, but once you learned it, it became easy.

            <p class="size-17" lang="x-size-17" style="Margin-top: 20px;Margin-bottom: 0;font-size: 17px;line-height: 26px;">
             Your body started to automate the process, and now it happens automatically with minimal effort. Pretty amazing.

             What does this have to do with Gyroscope?
            </p>

             Well, it is a similar process. If you are new and just starting out, everything may feel hard or complicated or like a lot of work. Like when I look at a new character and have no idea what it means, just a bunch of scribbles. But then after a few lessons or parsing it out, it starts to have meaning. Then in the future, the benefits are there instantly without having to do the work again.

             If you didn’t know what HRV was or how to optimize your sleep score or what foods contain protein or a thousand other things, learning these will take a bit of work. It will probably be frustrating, and easier to just skip. Getting in the habit of logging your meals, or figuring out how you can get that elusive 20-30g of fiber a day.

             But the good news is, if you make it through those levels, if you do the difficult work, it won’t be difficult forever. If you’re doing something every day, your brain will start to automate it. Once you figure it out, it may even start to feel

              easy.

             Then, you’ll continue being 
able to get those benefits, but without conscious effort.

             It is possible, and all humans are capable of this!

             However, as we get older it is common to just forget this skill.

             Our bodies are designed to save energy, to resist work unless we

             </em>
             have to. Or if we really motivate ourselves, by making things feel like a game. Or competing with our friends. Or putting money on the line. So there are still a few ways to make it happen, but it

              is
             </em>
             always going to be a bit of effort.

             But that effort means you’re learning and growing. Taking a shortcut, or just taking some pill, or some other solution that skips those steps, may feel more convenient but also means you’re not growing as fast.

              I tried a few different apps that were out there. My Fitness Pal, Zero, Strava, 75 Hard, even tried Zombies! Run! at one point.  She was messing with the UX in Gyroscope and thought I would enjoy it.

                 What is your favorite aspect of the app?

              One of the simplest ones that is the most satisfying to me is the workout breakdowns. There is something about seeing your activity measured in doughnuts, cookies and pizza that just connects with people (or at least me) on a basic level and says "Check it out, this is a tangible representation of the work you put in."

              On a day where maybe the scale isn't as kind as you would like, that can be an incentive to look forward to a keepo you putting in the work that 
day.

              The meal scanning from photographs is a huge benefit as well. One of the pitfalls of other apps I've used in the past to track my intake has been the tedium of entering in the data manually.

              This is made increasingly more difficult if you are trying to not just eat out of cellophane wrappers.  It's easy for an app to track what a Brand X Protein bar is, It's much better to be able to take a photo of your homemade turkey and three bean chili and give a brief description.

              Lastly, the AI interface and tools that are available really help make Gyroscope a complete package.  It checks in on my stress and doesn't just say "maybe you should meditate" it offers me built in guided meditations.  It isn't telling me I have an issue and sending me out to look for a solution, it is offering solutions in the App itself.

              This is huge because it's easy to close an App and get distracted and then completely forget to get back to what you were looking to do. Keeping it "in house" makes it far easier to actually do what you intended to do and not just get distracted and leave it by the wayside.
