                                 The Arctic Refuge is one of the most wild places left on Earth. Even for those who may never set foot there, the Arctic Refuge is an important symbol of the wild. For generations, the Gwich’in people have cared for this land and fought to protect it -- they refer to the coastal plain as "The Sacred Place Where Life Begins." The protection of this irreplaceable landscape is a matter of survival and food security for the Gwich’in, whose way of life is inextricably tied to the health and migration routes of the Porcupine Caribou Herd.
