Not at the beginning, not at the peak, but right here in the final stretch, in the days when it’s easiest to mourn what’s ending (sleeping in! vacation! sunshine!) or rush headfirst toward what’s next (school! scheduling! holidays!).

                   The end of summer has a way of testing our presence. As we’re tempted to look backward or leap forward, we have an opportunity to stay with what’s here now and train our awareness. And your heart can help. I mean that literally.

                   <strong>
                    The Pause That Matters
                   </strong>
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">

                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                   As an obesity medicine physician, I work with people who want real change in not only their bodies but in how they experience their lives. Together, we often achieve this comprehensive change through fasting. As I’ve learned through their experiences as well as my own: fasting is more than a metabolic strategy. It creates a pause that affects nearly every system in the body. Science backs this up.
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                   Thanks to decades of research into the autonomic nervous system (which manages our “fight or flight” and “rest and digest” states), we now understand that your heart and brain are in constant conversation, and it’s your heart that does most of the talking. When you’re rushing, anxious, or overwhelmed, your heart reacts. This triggers a physiological cascade, spiking cortisol, disrupting your peace, intensifying cravings, and making everything feel harder.

                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                   However, when you pause,

                    even for a single mindful breath
                   </em>
                   , and intentionally elicit feelings of calm, appreciation, or safety, your system shifts. Your heart rhythms stabilize. Your nervous system regulates appropriately. This state is called by many names—mind-heart synchrony and autonomic balance are just two—and it’s one of the most powerful physiologic resets you can give yourself. Your body becomes a more peaceful, effective, and responsive place to be.

                   And what is fasting if not many of these exact sorts of pauses?
