      Dear Friend,

      In the early hours of October 8, Rachel woke up to something every homeowner dreads: her smoke alarm going off.
      <em>
       “I was lying in bed and I heard one of the alarms go off. I got up to look and didn’t see anything, so I went back to bed.”
      </em>
      A few minutes later, another alarm sounded and this time there was no mistaking the reason why.
      <em>
       “When I got up, flames were everywhere.”
      </em>
      <br/>
      <br/>
      Rachel grabbed a blanket to shield herself and tried to get to the front door, but the smoke and flames were overwhelming. Thankfully, she remembered the fire escape plan that American Red Cross volunteers had helped her practice months earlier.
      <em>
       “They reminded me that if I couldn’t make it out the front door, to go to the back door or out a window.”
      </em>
      That guidance saved her life — she escaped through the back door and was able to call for help.
      <br/>
      <br/>
      After firefighters put out the flames, a Red Cross Disaster Action Team arrived to help Rachel through the shock of what had happened.
      <em>
       “I was so thankful that the Red Cross came out. They were so kind and even gave me a hug. I did not realize that the Red Cross did this kind of thing.”
      </em>
      <br/>
      <br/>
