                                 At 4 a.m. on a cold December morning in 2008, Betty Johnson woke to breaking news: a massive coal ash spill had just devastated the town of Kingston, Tennessee. She woke her husband, Tommy. Within minutes, he was out the door and headed straight into what would become one of the worst environmental disasters in US history.
                                 <br/>
                                 <br/>
                                 Tommy worked grueling 16-hour days cleaning up nearly a billion gallons of toxic coal ash -- a waste product of coal energy containing arsenic, mercury, and other dangerous chemicals. He came home covered in ash so thick and potent that he undressed in the garage to keep it out of the house. Even bleach couldn't erase the smell.

                                 <br/>
                                 Not long after, Tommy started getting sick. Still, he kept working to support his family. Over time, constant exhaustion and painful skin lesions forced him to retire. He had trouble breathing and would pass out from overexertion.
                                 <br/>
                                 <br/>
                                 Tommy Johnson died from complications linked to coal ash exposure. Just 18 days later, Betty stood before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to speak out about the dangers of coal ash.
                                 <br/>
                                 <br/>
                                 <b>
                                  "They work for us, not for corporations,"
                                 </b>
                                 she said. "The EPA is for the people." Still, Betty felt unheard by the people who held the power to protect communities like hers.

                                 <br/>
                                 <b>
                                  Today, the Trump administration is going a step further in proposing dangerous rollbacks to the protections meant to prevent more families from experiencing this kind of loss.
