               "Women don’t hang themselves." I was told that in the immediate aftermath of the suicide of Mary Richardson Kennedy on May 16, 2012, and while it was an over-simplification of complicated statistics, I never forgot it.
              </p>
              <p>
               After the death of RFK Jr.'s second wife, close friends confided how she'd been pushed to the brink in her final days, with growing pressure from her husband RFK Jr. to capitulate in divorce negotiations, fear of losing custody of their four kids, money worries and distress over his relationship with Cheryl Hines. The Mary they described was like so many of the New York women I knew, a great friend, a cool downtown girl, warm, intelligent. What happened?
              </p>
              <p>
               A few days after our 2012 cover story came out, I got a call at my desk. The person did not give me their name (though there were some clues) and told me our article had caused a lot of problems for RFK Jr. — that he was angry about it — but that we’d gotten it right. There was more to the story.
              </p>
              <p>
               The following year,
               <em>
                New York Post
               </em>
               investigative reporter Isabel Vincent got access to RFK Jr.'s private diaries. The Post called them the "Sex Diaries," as they’d allegedly revealed his sexual conquests and the stories made headlines.
              </p>
              <p>
               I never forgot Mary. There was something so haunting about her story, the horror for her family, her kids. How some in the Kennedy family blamed her for "her demons," when the truth was much more complicated than that. Just a few weeks ago, I learned that Isabel Vincent had written a biography,

                RFK Jr.: The Fall
               </em>

                and Rise
               </em>
               , detailing the chaos and violence of his early years, the assassinations of his father and his uncle, addiction, turmoil and his astonishing rise to power. For the first time, the author shares why Mary had taken the diaries in those final months and weeks of her life. "For insurance," she says. "For leverage."
