          Investors push back hard on SEC plan to end quarterly earnings reports
         </a>
        </h1>
        <div style="font-size:18px;line-height:1.6;color:#1a1a1a;text-align:left;">
         <p style="margin:0;">
          The SEC is facing an
unusually intense backlash from the investment community over its proposal to eliminate mandatory quarterly earnings reports, with investors flooding the agency with formal complaints. The volume and tenor of the opposition signals that the business and financial community sees the change not as a burden-reduction measure but as a threat to market transparency and the reliable information flows that underpin equity valuations, analyst models, and trading strategies.
         </p>
         <p style="margin:12px 0 0;">
          For executives and CFOs, the stakes are
practical: quarterly reporting sets the rhythm of investor relations, capital allocation signaling, and earnings guidance. For portfolio managers and analysts, it anchors forecasting cadences and creates accountability checkpoints that quarterly investors depend on to assess management performance.
         </p>
         <p style="margin:12px 0 0;">
          What to watch: Whether the SEC moderates the proposal in response to the complaints or presses forward. A final rule that curtails earnings frequency could reshape how public companies communicate with markets and may
prompt some institutional investors to reconsider their exposure to equities where information flow becomes less predictable.
         </p>

          Brazil eyes patent suspensions and audiovisual curbs in response to Trump's 25% tariff

         <p style="margin:0;">
          Brazil convened top ministers
Thursday to draft retaliatory measures against a new 25% U.S. tariff on many Brazilian products, with options including restrictions on dividend and royalty remittances by U.S. audiovisual companies and suspension of pharmaceutical and agricultural patents, according to three sources who spoke to Reuters. The planned response draws on Brazil's reciprocity law, which President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pledged to invoke. The approach is notable for targeting U.S. intellectual property rights rather than imports, a strategy designed to pressure
Washington while insulating Brazilian consumers from higher prices. "How we proceed from here will depend on the instructions the president gives us, but it is highly unlikely there won't be a tough response," one source said. For U.S. media, entertainment, and pharmaceutical companies with significant Brazilian revenue, the threat is direct and material.

          U.S. confirms it will not renew executive order revoking Hong Kong's special trade status

         <p style="margin:0;">
          China signaled Friday that the United States will allow
the executive order revoking Hong Kong's preferential trade privileges to lapse, with Washington confirming to Beijing it will not renew the order. The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control said the national emergency declared under the order has expired and that sanctioned individuals have been delisted, though some, including Hong Kong leader John Lee and predecessor Carrie Lam, were moved to a separate sanctions list under a different act. The development, which follows President Trump's May meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing, removes one
friction point in the bilateral relationship and could gradually restore Hong Kong's position in certain trade and financial arrangements.

          China rejected President
Trump's claim that it had conducted the largest compromise of election data in U.S. history as baseless, but calibrated its response carefully to avoid derailing months of diplomatic progress. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China has "no interest in interfering in the U.S. elections and has never done so," leveling a vague counter-accusation without demands or threats. China experts said Beijing read Trump's speech as domestic midterm politics rather than a directed foreign policy broadside. The restrained posture underscores
Beijing's priority of preserving the bilateral thaw ahead of Xi Jinping's expected September visit to the United States.

          China urges U.S. to stop 'groundless' election interference accusations ahead of Xi's September visit

         <p style="margin:0;">
          China's Foreign
Ministry on Friday called U.S. allegations of Chinese election interference "entirely fabricated," urging Washington to stop making what it called groundless accusations after Trump again raised doubts about the 2020 election results and blamed Beijing. Asked whether the dispute could affect Xi Jinping's planned September visit to the United States, spokesperson Lin Jian said China wants Washington to "do something conducive to China-U.S. relations." Both governments endorsed a new bilateral management framework following Trump's May visit to
Beijing, and Xi has confirmed he accepted Trump's invitation to visit the U.S. in September, leaving both sides with strong incentives to contain the row.

          Chinese President Xi Jinping used the World AI Conference in Shanghai on Friday to
position China as the preferred artificial intelligence partner for developing nations, announcing 5,000 AI training and seminar opportunities for developing countries and pledging expanded AI cooperation with ASEAN, the Arab League, the African Union, and other blocs. Xi said AI development should not be a "solo performance" by any single country and called for stronger international governance. The announcements came a day after 29 countries signed an agreement to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, to be
headquartered in Shanghai, signaling a concerted push to build an AI governance architecture outside U.S.-led frameworks.

          Xi Jinping opened China's annual World Artificial
Intelligence Conference in Shanghai by calling for global cooperation in AI development and governance, while explicitly criticizing what he called the "overstretching" of national security concerns — a direct reference to U.S. export controls that have blocked China from accessing advanced chips and technologies. "We should together oppose the practice of overstretching the concept of national security in the field of artificial intelligence," Xi said. China pledged expanded AI cooperation with ASEAN, the Arab League, the African Union, BRICS,
and other multilateral groupings, reinforcing a strategy to build technology partnerships outside the U.S.-aligned technology ecosystem and erode Washington's ability to isolate China in the sector.

          Trump revives sweeping public-charge rule, broadening grounds to deny green cards

        <div style="font-size:17px;line-height:1.6;color:#1a1a1a;text-align:left;">
         <p style="margin:0;">
          The Trump administration on Thursday issued a final rule reviving the broad public-charge test for green card applicants, reversing a 2022 Biden-era policy that limited consideration to cash-benefit usage. Under the new framework, any use of public benefits — including Medicaid, housing assistance, and food stamps — as well as factors such as age, education, skills, and health, can be weighed against applicants seeking legal permanent residence or entry into the country. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will begin
applying the new standard in 60 days. Critics warn the absence of clear limits invites arbitrary denials and will discourage immigrants from seeking public assistance they are entitled to. For employers relying on skilled immigrant labor, the broader, less predictable standard adds another layer of uncertainty to an already constrained immigration pipeline.

          DHS caps international student visas at four years, restricting transfers and major changes

        <div style="font-size:16px;line-height:1.6;color:#1a1a1a;text-align:left;">
         <p style="margin:0;">
          The Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule limiting
international student visas to four years, ending the longstanding practice of allowing students to remain enrolled indefinitely. The rule, taking effect in mid-September, also requires DHS approval before students can transfer schools or change majors in their first year. International student enrollment has already fallen an average of 20 percent over the past year amid a series of administration actions. For U.S. universities, which depend heavily on full-tuition international enrollment to subsidize operations and fund research, the added
unpredictability compounds a significant and growing revenue risk.

          Trump administration cuts foreign journalist visas to 240 days, slashes Chinese reporters to 90

         <p style="margin:0;">
          The Department of Homeland
Security announced Thursday it will replace the open-ended "duration of status" visa system for foreign journalists with fixed terms of 240 days, extendable upon application. Chinese journalists face a stricter 90-day limit. The rule raises immediate concerns about press freedom and creates a practical risk of retaliation against American journalists working in China and other countries. It also adds tension to U.S.-China relations despite both governments' stated efforts to stabilize ties following Trump's May summit with Xi Jinping, with Xi's
planned September visit to the U.S. now taking place against a more complicated bilateral backdrop.

          DOJ sues Maryland over in-state tuition and financial aid for undocumented students

          The Justice Department filed a lawsuit
against Maryland challenging state laws that provide in-state tuition rates and financial aid to undocumented students, arguing the statutes unconstitutionally discriminate against U.S. citizens. Approximately 2,000 undocumented students graduate from Maryland high schools each year. The DOJ has filed similar suits against more than a dozen states, including California, Virginia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Minnesota, signaling a broad federal campaign to roll back state-level higher education access policies for undocumented residents and
creating legal and financial uncertainty for universities in those states.

          ICE traffic stops in Charlotte continued at a steady pace despite brief federal ban

          Activist data trackers say ICE traffic stop tactics in Charlotte, North Carolina —
including vehicle blocking and window-breaking — have continued at roughly the same rate for more than a year, even as the Trump administration briefly banned such stops this week following shootings of two men in Maine and Texas. Within a day of the ban, Trump reversed course on social media, calling the stops "important and effective." The episode highlights the gap between federal policy announcements and field operations, and keeps liability and civil rights litigation risk elevated for local jurisdictions where agents
operate.

          Houston police released the city's first
quarterly report on ICE cooperation Thursday, showing officers encountered 103 people with civil immigration warrants between April and June, releasing 57 percent and turning 19 over to federal agents. The report comes after a fatal ICE shooting in Houston's Magnolia Park reignited debate over police-ICE cooperation and after the Texas governor threatened to pull $114 million in grant funding if the city maintained an ordinance restricting how officers interact with ICE. The report is the sole surviving requirement from that ordinance, making
it the primary accountability mechanism left for tracking local enforcement patterns.

          California AG says no CNN spinoff would resolve Paramount-WBD antitrust case

          California Attorney General Rob Bonta told
reporters Thursday that there are no settlement negotiations with Paramount or Warner Bros. Discovery and that a CNN spinoff would not resolve the antitrust lawsuit his 12-state coalition has brought to block the merger. A federal court hearing on a temporary restraining order was scheduled for Friday afternoon, with Bonta saying he is "hopeful" the TRO will be granted, though he acknowledged it could take additional days. Paramount and WBD reportedly expect the judge to issue the TRO, which would pause the deal for several weeks. The case will
test whether state attorneys general can block a major media consolidation that has already cleared federal review, with significant implications for the broader wave of media M&amp;A activity.

          Two years after xAI built its Colossus and Colossus II data centers
at speed in greater Memphis, community complaints about noise and emissions from natural gas turbines have become a reference point for opposition movements and legislators across the country. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul this week enacted a one-year moratorium on new AI data center construction in her state, and New Jersey recently passed legislation requiring data center operators to bear their own electricity costs rather than shifting them to ratepayers. SpaceX, which acquired xAI in February, completed a record IPO in June with the Memphis
facilities central to its growth narrative, illustrating the tension between investor reward and community cost that is now driving policy across multiple states.

          Trump Media &amp; Technology Group announced Thursday that it plans to offer
Wall Street trading firms and institutions paid high-speed access to Truth Social posts through a product called Truth PSI, allowing subscribers to receive posts in milliseconds ahead of the general public. Because President Trump holds the platform's largest following and is the biggest shareholder of the publicly traded parent company, critics say the arrangement creates a direct financial conflict of interest. "He's selling expedited, privileged access to information about what he is doing as president," said Kathleen Clark of Washington
University School of Law. The company did not respond to questions about whether the president's posts will be included in the offering.

          France's National Gambling Authority ordered
internet service providers on July 16 to block access to the Polymarket prediction market website, saying the platform promotes an illegal gambling offering and that some wagers could be manipulated. The move follows Spain's temporary ban on both Polymarket and Kalshi in May and a June proposal by the top U.S. derivatives regulator for new draft rules covering prediction markets. The escalating regulatory pressure across major markets introduces meaningful compliance and operational risk for prediction market platforms that have attracted
significant capital and political attention in the United States.

          President Trump's longtime teleprompter operator is under investigation for potential insider trading on the prediction platform Kalshi, according to sources cited by CNN. The trades involved "mention markets," where users can bet on specific words or phrases a public figure will use in a speech. An operator who loads and manages a president's teleprompter would have advance knowledge of speech content before it is delivered — giving that person a potential information advantage over other bettors. The investigation adds to
growing scrutiny of prediction markets and raises fresh questions about insider access to presidential communications.

          Citizens Bank said Friday it has terminated its lending relationships with private
prison operators GEO Group and CoreCivic, framing the decision as a commercial one driven by the clients' changed financial needs rather than activist pressure. The bank stated the exit "does not reflect any change in our view regarding these companies' business models or operations." Advocacy groups, which had run months of protests and publicized customer withdrawals, called the outcome a victory while expressing skepticism about the bank's framing. Several major banks ended similar relationships in 2019, and the decision narrows the
institutional financing options available to the two largest private detention operators in the country.
