Join us for the final two lectures in a series exploring the evolution of history painting with art historian Kathryn Calley Galitz. Track its origins in early modern Europe, when the past was used to frame the present, to its role today, as contemporary artists from Kerry James Marshall to Nicole Eisenman and Kent Monkman variously reframe old histories and picture history as it is being made.

Access the expertise of The Met from anywhere and expand your knowledge of art history. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by discovering works from across The Met that reveal the roots, course, and aftermath of the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). Together with Met curators Wolf Burchard, Constance McPhee, and Sylvia Yount, explore the paintings, drawings, prints, and decorative arts that tell the intertwined stories of the birth of our country.
