                   For many of us, when we think about having a break from our usual routines, we automatically start thinking about how to fill it. There are projects we've set aside, people we want to see, and places we want to go. That's all great stuff! But so many of us—students, educators, and families alike—focus so much on

                   time that we ignore the benefits of
                   <em>
                    saving
                   </em>
                   it for true downtime. 🧘🏼

                   In fact, sitting quietly with ourselves, without seeking stimulation, is something many want to avoid. It can be uncomfortable and anxiety-provoking. But that doesn't mean we should avoid it.

                    In fact, having open, unoccupied moments is something we should all practice because

                   ? Science says

                   . Studies say boredom is an agitated state, a seeking. Too much boredom paired with low impulse control can lead to negative outcomes. It's more about tolerating boredom long enough to tap into our own agency to launch into a fulfilling activity and really dig into it. 🧠

                   There's a fine line here: Allowing for unstructured downtime can definitely prompt kids to complain that they're bored. But at that moment,

                    the key is preventing a freefall into scrolling or passive consumption
                   </strong>
                   . And we can't fix it

                    for
                   </em>
                   them, as agency is a key factor (and they often reject every suggestion anyway 😅). We want kids to have the space and time to find and pursue passions, actively. This can range widely: starting a Lego build, free play with friends, doodling, learning and trying a new skill from a YouTube demo, coding a game, plinking out a song on an instrument, etc.

                    : In a more motivated moment, help kids create a list of possible off-screen downtime activities they enjoy. These could be things they want to learn about, try for the first time, or just do for fun, depending on the context. If some are only possible at certain times or with pre-planning (painting when there's only 10 minutes, playing with a friend a town over, etc.), you can categorize the activities. That way, when the "I'm bored" reports start rolling in, there's something you can point to.

                     Mindfulness
                    </strong>
                    : Teach kids how to sit and focus on their breath, starting with one minute. Be clear about why: Being able to sit, unstimulated, is a skill and ultimately great for well-being. And if this just isn't possible in your classroom, doing a super low-stim activity (describing a leaf, doodling their names, etc.) can serve a similar purpose, especially with reflection built in.
