                      is a tongue-in-cheek advice book that looks at the strange and surreal nature of female martyrdom to explain the absurdity of living as a woman in 2025. The book is divided into advice about dating, body image, and work from the careers of nuns from the 16th and 17th centuries.  My favorite section was the chapter “Soul.” There, I learned about Jeanne des Anges, who wrote a 1644 “spiritual autobiography” in which, Garriga and Urbita write, she “depicts herself as the worst of demons, a creature of inherent wickedness, deserving of more tears of guilt and repentance than all those shed by Catherine of Siena and María de Santo Domingo combined.” Who wouldn’t want to read about an antihero coming with that kind of an introduction? A perfect companion to embracing one’s sloth.

Never mind a decades-long hollowing out and attack on the traditional organizations—unions, political clubs, neighborhood-block associations—that organized people locally for such actions and the long, well-documented history of law-enforcement interference with leftist organizations since the days of COINTELPRO. It can feel like you are engaging in thought, like you are making a point, when you say,

Not often talked about, but a far more common response, is freezing. “It’s statistically uncommon for somebody to physically fight back during a sexual assault. Verbal resistance is more common, but even that occurs less often than people imagine. ‘And yet victims beat up on themselves for not fighting or fleeing,’” Percy writes, including a quote from Jim Hopper, a clinical psychologist who studies how fear alters the brain functioning of sexual-assault victims. Throughout the book, Percy details women of varying circumstances—a military recruit, a sex worker recovering from compound traumas, a young girl at a party with men she thought were her friends—who all responded to their assaults with this “freezing.”

                    What’s actually happening here? “Tonic immobility,” Percy explains, is “an extreme response to threat” that paralyzes its sufferers so victims are unable to move or call for help. “It’s a temporary catatonic state that draws its evolutionary power from the fact that many predators lose interest in dead prey, as their meat could harbor deadly bacteria. The response is often triggered…when escape seems impossible. Muscles go stiff… [and] the body is numbed. It’s an act of self-preservation that evolved … to alleviate the agony and horror of being eaten alive.…[H]umans can’t speak, even if they try.” Tonic immobility is not dissociation; people suffering from tonic immobility remain acutely aware of the violence being done to them. Their body, though, freezes, and even the parts of their brain that generate language bruise and suffer, so that the words to process what is happening become harder to find. The narrative is lost.

                    When people experience this shutdown, Percy notes, without the language to narrate what is happening, they often revert to the social scripts that are ingrained within all of us, reinforcing the hierarchies of gender, race, and class that harm so many women. What this looks like in the moment is a girl who lifts her hips for her attacker, a woman who takes off her expensive skirt before she is raped so that it doesn’t get destroyed, or a woman who comforts her attacker after the assault to make sure he is OK. In other words, all of the ways victims don’t respond “perfectly” to assault and all of the things, historically, that police and lawyers and judges have pointed to in order to discredit survivors seeking justice.

                    <br/>
                    Freezing, or tonic immobility, is as much a part of the very old script of predator and prey as fight or flight. It’s observed throughout the natural world, though for us humans, it’s a response steeped in shame and silence. Percy adeptly notes, though, that the military at least acknowledges this common response to threat; it’s partly why there is so much focus on drills and training: to ensure that a soldier has a script to override this falling apart.

                    Percy is especially skilled at describing the natural world. The book opens with stunning descriptions of her childhood exploring the Oregon wilderness and her mother teaching her how to play dead in case of an animal attack. “Rabbits grew fur that changed with the seasons. Lizards could amputate their tails to get away. I learned there were costs to self-preservation, that keeping ourselves safe meant we had to give something up.” It struck me how acutely tonic immobility describes the political, spiritual, and cultural response to so many of the violations of 2025. I don’t think you can understand our current moment without understanding the dynamics of sexual assault, in particular. The choreography of sexual assault is the basis for the power dynamics of repressive politics. Percy’s careful, considered outlining of tonic immobility is a key insight into why the first half of 2025 felt so constipated, why we were so completely at a loss for how to fight back. But maybe there’s another story, a more effective narrative that those of us who want to fight back can drill for. “I learned the horned lizard spurts blood from its eyes to scare predators,” Percy writes. “It made itself monstrous to stay alive.”

                     “My favorite workspace was during the summer I bought a membership to a modest private pool just outside Philly. I’d get there when they opened, bring my laptop and my book, and park myself in a chair all day. There was something productive about all that benign and bright ambient noise mixing with the sensation of being wet or recently having been. The snack bar with water, ice, and hot dogs didn’t hurt either.”
