                   With one hand he shoos me away; with the other he scrolls through dozens (...and

                   !) of assignments from his teachers. Peering over his shoulder, the realization hits me:

                    My son has spent the better part of seventh grade completing digital worksheets on a cheap Chromebook at school.
                   </strong>
                   I think about it:
                   <em>
                    That's a lot of screen time!
                   </em>
                   But then also: That's
                   <strong>
                    <em>
                     not
                    </em>
                   </strong>
                   what good edtech implementation looks like.

                    As a parent, I'm incensed. As a former ELA teacher, I'm incredulous. But I'm also really conflicted about this. You see, I've spent most of the past 15 years working with edtech

                   —thinking and writing about what quality edtech use looks like.

                   . Not tech for tech's sake, but instead: How could the right tech tools, implemented well, enable teachers and students to do things that couldn't otherwise be done in a classroom?

                   Fast-forward … It's 2026 and I'm watching a very different edtech reality play out in my own home.

                   <strong>
                    The current debate over edtech in schools overlooks something important: Cellphones and edtech are both problems in schools—
                   </strong>
                   <strong>
                    <em>
                     but they're not the same problem
                    </em>
                   </strong>
                   <strong>
                    .
                   </strong>
                   Banning phones made sense. But banning all edtech or even screen time? That's more complicated.
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                   Recently, the

                    bold call for school cellphone bans
                   </a>
                   was right on the money (or close to it). Forged amid the popularity of Jonathan Haidt's
                   <em>
                    Anxious Generation
                   </em>
                   bestseller, school cellphone bans cut their way into public consciousness. And they've been (mostly) well received by a broad coalition: parents' groups, policymakers, and educators alike. School-, district-, and even state-wide cellphone bans abound. Heck,
                   <a style="text-decoration: underline; color: #423FE1;" target="_self" title="How Cellphone Bans Have Affected Students’ Lives: What Teens Say">
                    even some students support them!
                   </a>
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                  </p>

                   Now Haidt (and others) have broadened their scope. It isn't just about cellphones—it's about banning
                   <em>
                    all
                   </em>
                   edtech from classrooms, or even screen time entirely. For a lot of parents out there (myself included!), it's an alluring prospect. Especially when we see screen time battles play out in our own homes. Why would I want my kids to have even more screen time at school?
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                  </p>
                  <p style="margin:0;margin-bottom:0">
                   <strong>
                    But we shouldn't conflate the problems of cellphones with the problems of edtech.
                   </strong>
                   You don't need a researcher to know that cellphones aren't great for kids' learning. Teachers have been saying this for decades—probably since the very first Nokia disrupted a classroom in, like, 1997! 😂 Edtech, on the other hand, is much more nuanced and complex.
